Life as a Police Enquiry Centre Officer

Police Enquiry Centre Officers (PECOs) play a crucial part in calls to the Police Enquiry Centre, eliciting and evaluating information from callers, providing information & advice, and deciding on appropriate courses of action.

Evaluating the urgency of incidents, PECOs forge a pivotal link between the caller and the Force’s Control Rooms and other resources, making sure enquiries are handled promptly and effectively. There are currently three Police Enquiry Centres, based at Kidlington, Windsor and Milton Keynes.

The nature of calls can be extremely varied; anything from the report of a missing person or an abandoned vehicle right through to notification of a burglary or a road traffic accident – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It’s a multifaceted role where alongside evaluating the need for further action, you’ll need both accuracy and attention to detail, to update computerised records along with the correct classification of crimes records for Home Office purposes.

In short, you’re the first line of contact for members of the public; anything from basic general enquiries for information, right through to the reporting of urgent assistance and emergencies. You’ll be tasked with it all.
